Zinc zFlyte Scooter Case Review
Is it a scooter or is it a carry-on bag? It’s both. But is it any good?
Instead of forcing our 4 and 6 year old to carry their own backpacks, which would have ended up being us carrying their bags after about 5 minutes, we opted for the zFlyte Scooter suitcase. This half-scooter-half-cary-on suitcase not only saved our backs, it got us across the terminal in no time. Super useful.
Review
It’s a scooter. That’s awesome. Honestly, sometimes I wish I had one of these for me. Rolling through the airport, our girls were the envy of every kid in the place. And adults would doff their caps to our outstanding travel-parenting win. Yeah, they were awesome. But not without some faults.
Pros: The plastic scooter case is firm but flexible, so it kept things safe from bumps (or crashes!) but was soft enough to stuff into spaces that were a little tight, if needed.
The scooter is solid. It’s metal, the constructions is sturdy, the bearings are smooth and the wheels are big enough to easily clear bumps and cracks. The foot stand portion folds up and locks securely into position.
The inside of the bag is roomy and sectioned off with a couple of dividers and a zipped portion. The functional metal part of the scooter is separated from your carry on items.
Cons: when folded into the closed position, the metal locking mechanism sits in a way that it dropped below the wheels at some angles. This was an oversight in design, and meant that the metal could damage wood floors while being pulled.
The upright handle separated from the housing (on both units) after about a month of use. We were able jerry-rig a solution that limited its range forcing it to stay in place, but this was a significant product failure. There is no other handle to carry or lift the case, so this is a weak point that succumbed to the repeated stress.
Pro? We contacted the manufacturer, who was sympathetic and suggested a return or refund, but since we were on the road that wasn’t practical.
Overall
Not recommended. Even though we can’t recommend buying it, we loved this scooter case. Even with the design faults we discovered, it made moving through an airport or train station effortless, which was priceless. We also repaired the handle issue with some solid plastic twine, and may use this case again on future trips.
That said, the nature of the failure is a deal breaker. If we hear from the manufacturer (or in the comments) that they have been addressed in new releases, we will update this product review.
