Swim with Sea Turtles in Akumal

Swim with Sea Turtles in Akumal – A Family Day Trip from Playa del Carmen or Cancun

Looking for an unforgettable experience near Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or Cancun? Akumal is the perfect day trip destination for families — with calm beaches, delicious local food, and the chance to snorkel alongside sea turtles in their natural habitat.

Why Visit Akumal?

Akumal is famous for its sea turtles. This coastal town is a vital breeding area, where turtles return year after year to lay their eggs. Thanks to conservation efforts by local groups and volunteers, visitors can enjoy this incredible sight while respecting the natural environment.

The shallow, clear water and gentle nature of the turtles make Akumal one of the most accessible places in Mexico to swim with marine life — especially for young kids and first-time snorkelers.

A Family-Friendly Beach Escape

Beyond snorkeling, Akumal has beautiful beaches with soft sand and calm surf — perfect for swimming and relaxing with little ones. Whether you’re spotting colourful fish, gliding next to a turtle, or just enjoying a peaceful beach day, Akumal offers the kind of laid-back adventure that sticks with you.

A word of caution: While you’re out there, slightly distracted by the fact that you’re swimming with sea turtles, be aware of the boat traffic. The water is very calm, but it’s still best to put on a life jacket to increase your visibility.

Be respectful. Finally, encourage your kids to practice responsible behaviour while swimming with sea turtles. Turtles are wild animals and should not be touched, held or teased. Model respectful behaviour and keep a safe distance. Ensuring they are not stressed out by human behaviour is crucial to ensuring they return to this important breeding area, and that others can continue to engage with nature in this way.

How to Get to Akumal from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum

Getting to Akumal is easy, whether you’re coming from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum. Your options depend on your travel style, group size, and budget.

1. Rent a Car (Our Top Pick)

Driving to Akumal is straightforward and gives you the most flexibility — especially if you’re bringing snorkel gear or traveling with kids. The drive from Cancun to Akumal takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic, and the roads are well-marked.

On our last trip, we rented from Hertz and had a great experience. (If you’re considering this option, check out our [Pro Tips for Renting a Car in Mexico].)

Parking tip: There’s a reasonably priced parking lot on the left just after Hotel Akumal Caribe.

2. Take a Colectivo (Local Bus)

If you’re traveling light and want to experience the local way of getting around, colectivos (shared vans) are a cheap and reliable option. They run regularly between Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Akumal. However, they can get crowded, and there’s limited space for bags or bulky gear like lifejackets.

3. Use a Rideshare or Taxi

You can also take a taxi or use a rideshare service to get to Akumal. This is a good middle ground if you’re not renting a car but want a more direct and comfortable option than the colectivo.

Directions to Akumal by Car: Where to Exit and Park

If you’re driving to Akumal from Cancun or Playa del Carmen, you’ll be taking Highway 307 south.

Watch for the Akumal Playa Exit

After kilometer marker 255, you’ll see signs for Akumal Pueblo and Akumal Playa. Get into the left lane so you can take the Retorno (U-turn). Once you’ve turned, follow the signs for Akumal Playa.

As you drive in, you might see security guards or parking touts trying to stop you. Just tell them you’re going to a restaurant — that’s usually enough for them to wave you through.

Where to park in Akumal:

Go under the arch for Hotel Akumal Caribe, and look for a parking lot on your left. The first entrance often has a chain across it, so you may need to drive past, turn around, and re-enter. The lot has affordable hourly parking and is close to the beach.

How to Access the Beach (Without Paying Extra)

Here’s where you’ll need to be a little wily. Some opportunistic touts might try to charge a “beach access” fee. You don’t need to pay — beach access is free and open to the public. Just be polite but confident.

Head toward the dive shop across from the parking lot — access is just beyond it.

Once you reach the beach, you’re free to enjoy it. There’s no need to book a tour if you’ve brought your own gear. Just put on your mask and snorkel, wade into the calm waters, and start exploring. The turtles and fish are right there in the bay.

Where to Eat Near Akumal Beach

No Akumal day trip is complete without taking a break to enjoy some delicious local food and drinks. There are a few restaurants right in town, but our top pick is La Buena Vida Grill.

If you’re driving, it’s just a quick 5-minute drive from the main beach area. If you’re on foot, it’s about a 15-minute walk — just long enough to build up an appetite. The walk is easy, and the reward is worth it.

La Buena Vida is a relaxed beachfront spot with great local food, a well-stocked bar, and super friendly staff. Whether you’re grabbing lunch after snorkeling or settling in for sunset cocktails, it’s one of those places that adds something special to your Akumal visit.

Highly recommended.
